There is no gPhone

I’ve been hearing rumours about a gPhone, a phone that is made by google. I put this on the side and do not plan on looking deeper into until today I ran into a gPhone video demonstration on youtube.

First of all, I like to break it to everyone that calls it a gPhone..that it actually is not called a gPhone. It goes by the name of Android and the creators of android is Google who started the project then partnered with LG, Mobile Handset Maker Deal Chart and I am certain a few more companies are involved. Also to break it you guys who think its a phone, its actually an Open Source Operating System. So what does this mean? It means it will do much more then an average would have the ability to do.

Think of Windows XP, that is an operating system and within this operating system you can install many applications, make your applications or download/purchase applications which is the one thing you cannot do so easily in phones. In mobile phones you either stick with the applications that your cell phone came with or do some research unless you already know how to and if your phone is compatible to install..lets say java applications for examples.

Android

Android uses a Linux Operating system, this favors developers a lot. Android uses Linux core kernel and therefore runs Linux applications and pretty much anything else made by users. This is an amazing feature google let on Android as more people enjoy writing applications and developing under Linux then Windows or Mac for instance.

Another amazing feature that describes the Android is that it is Open Source. Probably one of the first market products that is open source and you may ask why google did this? they can’t be making so much money doing this can they? Well we are not certain to whether they make more money or not But since its open source it opens doors to developers and programmers into developing their own software for the Android.

In the Android Home page, google has created a community system for all developers and other supporters to join in and discuss their new custom made applications and learn new ways of developing and using the Android. So who can write applications for this phone? Well everybody. If you have the knowledge and would like to participate in the Android development community then go ahead. You can download the SDK from the Android home page and probably also get some tutorials on the site on how to start off with your applications.

Google has opened a contest. Thats right a big one too, Google has an application contest for the Android. Whoever makes the best applications and hands it in by April 14, 2008 could win a lot of money. Here is the in dept information:

Cool apps that surprise and delight mobile users, built by developers like you, will be a huge part of the Android vision. To support you in your efforts, Google has launched the Android Developer Challenge, which will provide $10 million in awards — no strings attached — for great mobile apps built on the Android platform.

How It Works

The award money will be distributed equally between two Android Developer Challenges:

  • Android Developer Challenge I: We will accept submissions from January 2 through April 14, 2008
  • Android Developer Challenge II: This part will launch after the first handsets built on the platform become available in the second half of 2008

In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries received by April 14 will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. Those selected will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten $275,000 awards and ten $100,000 awards.

Thats a lot of money, but I am sure that means a lot of amazing applications are underway :), I almost can not wait. I am thinking of participating but I do own an Android, to broke to purchase one and analyzing and understand how coding works under this new operating system would take sometime.
