How to Shop Online.

The online market seems to be getting bigger and bigger as time moves on. Just about ten years ago there was merely a few online markets on the internet and a lot of people did not purchase from online stores for it was not secured or as reliable as they are now.

As it seems today, almost anyone with some knowledge of web development, some technical skills on how to work with customers and how to present a Shop can open an online market. Online business are much easier to manage, develop and control. If you were to open to a store anywhere you would be paying a lot mecommerceore then you actually would for an online business (I am referring to an online store). The most you would need to pay are your web host cost, this excluding shipping and customer support and such.

This said, thousands of people around the globe have opened their own internet marketing website. Also with the bigger auction websites such as eBay people become permanent or temporary resellers and make a pretty good income. My father started off his business career after I introduced him to eBay and his reseller reputation has grown through the roof for the past 3 years of working under ebay. Recently he has opened a website to list his items on his website rather then ebay because eBay has interests that are unpleasant, specially if your selling big items.

So How Do You buy something online? The actual process for this is easy, but can you really trust them? How do you pay for it? When should you pay for it? What if you don’t receive your package?. Well lets begin one at a time, Online shopping works as follows; You buy an item, you pay for the item THEN the seller or company will ship you the item. There are many different shipping companies therefore the length of time it takes for the deliver to arrive could vary.

So where do you shop online?. Lets say you were looking for a Playstation to buy for a nephew as a birthday present, in this case I would not recommend purchasing from any auction websites. Ebay is an auction website because eBay does not actual sell anything itself, it’s the eBay user’s that are selling products therefore If I was to buy a playstation I could and would purchase it from eBay but would make sure I receive the item first rather then shipping it straight to my nephew because eBay has a lot of fraud, for all you know your nephew could receive an empty box.

Amazon
One of my personal favorite websites is Amazon. Amazon’s security is pretty good which is why most people adores them. Amazon is an auction website AND amazon itself sells products therefore a lot of the items you see on amazon would have similar pricing to that in local stores. Amazon is great because they offer packaging as a ‘gift’ and also write a little letter if you want to write something to the person you are getting the present for. Amazon is pretty secure, I have not yet faced any problems with amazon and their shipping is ridiculous, they wrap your item so much to make sure it does not get damaged which is awesome :D.

The other giant, eBay does not provide the kind of security Amazon has. Although eBay has a bigger reputation then amazon due to its wide spread of users from anywhere in the world but with eBay you have to sometimes take risks. “What risk are you talking about” you may ask, some of you who have shopped on ebay and have not had any problems with anything then you haven’t really shopped so much on eBay. For example, usually when you buy something from a seller, you look in the sellers reputation, his history and his negative feedbacks and of course the seller’s location. So how exactly can you trust a seller who just joined eBay, has one feedback and is selling a plasma TV from china. I wouldn’t even bother looking. This is a problem because this seller could actually be a good seller but would like to risk your $1000?.

Some of the questions you should ask yourself before purchasing anything from ebay is:

  • Where is the seller’s location
  • How does he describe the item
  • How does he present it
  • What is his shipping policy like
  • What is his return policy like
  • How many feedbacks does he have
  • How many positive to negative (ratio) feedback he has

If you have any questions, even to just understand the seller better send him a message. One time I was purchasing a laptop online, the seller present the item very well, the describing and presentation language was very accureate and well written BUT when I messaged the seller about shipping, he couldn’t write english. I knew it was fraud because 1) Location was China (Do not mean to offend the chines but I have had a lot of problem with them in the online markets) 2) Acer freri laptop for $1500 while store price is $2500 [Brand New] 3) The seller had 3 feedbacks from other sellers.

One of my worst experience is that I lost $600 US for a laptop buying from a Chinese seller (one of my first times shopping). Seriously, I receive about 2-3 ebay messages in one to two days from Asian companies asking for partnership and to become a partner I must pay them $5000…ya..

paypal

Payment is another big problem. There are so many ways of paying for something your buying online BUT remember You Always want to go for the safest one. I use PayPal for ANYTHING I buy online. Paypal is an online banking system that is owned by eBay itself. Paypal is amazing because you can get your full money back if the seller is a fraud and it is very secured. One of the worst ways of paying for an item is Western Union. If your buying from someone in China they will sometimes tell you that “Our government does not allow Paypal therefore I cannot accept paypal, could please send me the money in western union” now that is B.S. Why, because with Western Union what you do is basically give this seller your money without anyone knowing or caring that you gave him the money and since he is in China (or other places) they can be almost never found. Western Union, online checks, money transfer…please do not trust them. PayPal is the only way you should pay for your item.

Paypal is free, easy to use and available for pretty much everyone. Go to www.Paypal.com and sign up your account, they ask for some identification but other that with them you are really safe.

When should you pay for your item? The two major companies I can rely and do some safe shopping is amazon and ebay. Amazon I believe is much more secure then ebay is therefore whenever I purchase something from amazon I can pay for it instantly but for ebay I usually put it a few hours or a day. If I shop on ebay at 6:00pm and purchase something, I review over the item description see if it fits my needs and depending on the value of the item I either pay it then or hold it off. If I was buying a book from ebay and the seller and the item presentation was good I can then pay it off right then and wait for my item…but if I was making a bigger purchase such as a $300 jacket I usually confirm I win the auction then pay for it the next day. The reason I do this is because the next day I can come back and look at the item a bit more closer, understand it and ask questions if I have to then finally pay for the item.

Whenever you make a purchase from ebay, it does not matter from who you purchase right after you pay for the item, message the seller to notify you when he/she has shipped the item to your location (ask them about what location as well). This is really good because it makes those busy sellers aware that you bought something and need it as soon as possible. I have bought something once that even a month later the seller did not even ship it because he forgot to. This method will make you more aware of where and how is your item getting to you.

If you do not receive your package, this usually is a bit of a hassle. It all depends on the seller really, my father if one his buyers do not receive the package he immediately ships the same item under super Express post so the buyer can receive it within a day or two. He is generous and understands business but other sellers would put you through some pain of getting another item or even getting your money back. Some sellers will think you are lying so this part of auction website is rough, once again if you did your payment transaction with Paypal you will be able to receive full refund so you are safe.

Shipping

The average time it takes for the shipping is about 10-14 business days, thats two weeks. But again, this could depend on your location on the grid, North America would take a day or two to receive another package from North America. If I was to buy something from China, it could take from 14 to 28 days to get here. There has been times where I have waited about two months for an item. Most of the time sellers will display the shipping rate, and time line in the item description, if they don’t it doesn’t hurts to ask.

Overall, it takes some good judgments and good understanding of things. If you are new and make mistakes, do not panic, you are new and it happens to everyone but do pay a visit to the help pages :) they are kind to everyone.

Good Luck!.
